Hongshan Culture Jade Owl (Chicken-Bone White)

Height: 8.9cm
Width: 7.6cm
Era:  The Late Hongshan period
This chicken-bone white jade owl features bulging eyes, a hooked beak, and two irregular trumpet-shaped perforations on its back (wider outside, narrower inside). The back is rendered in relief, with four incised lines vividly outlining the owl’s form. Claws and tail are also incised. The chest is curved, with wings slightly drooping, adorned by two parallel, symmetrical raised lines. The wing edges curl inward, and the tail tapers.

Buried long-term in alkaline soil on warm, sun-facing slopes, this softer Xiuyan jade developed a calcified surface layer, giving it a chicken-bone white appearance. Blessed by this unique environment, it boasts a thick, natural patina. The exquisite round-carving technique creates a lifelike, smooth, and refined depiction, with finely outlined ridges showcasing its dynamic power and beauty.

Hongshan Culture Jade Pig-Dragon

Height:: 11.4cm
Width: 7.4cm
Era: Middle Hongshan period

This jade pig-dragon is ring-shaped and limbless, with a plump head, large ears, round eyes, and wrinkles. Its coiled body forms a near-circle, with a small gap at the connection point. The snout protrudes forward, and the upper jaw has multiple folds. The broad muzzle is carved with fangs, highlighting pig-like features. A perforated hole, resembling a trumpet shape, is drilled through the neck for threading. The flat body centers around a large, biconically drilled hole—wider on the outside and narrower inside. Crafted from Xiuyan river-polished old jade (tremolite), it has a dense texture, high hardness, and a pale green hue. Natural staining appears on the head and body—yellow from soil and white from water.
The pig-dragon combines shallow relief and incised line carving, resulting in clean, fluid lines and a vivid, powerful form. Rounded transitions and meticulous detailing reflect exquisite craftsmanship. Its unique and mystical design sparks imagination. Ancient jade pig-dragons were regarded as cultural talismans, holding immense historical, cultural, artistic, and religious significance. It is one of the most iconic jade artifacts of the Hongshan Culture.
